This August marks an important date in the calendar for South Africa in social security matters as SASSA plans to implement a Mobility Grant. This unique grant tries to solve one of the greatest problems for South Africans living with a disability which is the challenge of moving freely to access services and navigate the South African landscape.
What is the New Mobility Grant?
The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) will start implementing Mobility Grants on August 15, 2025. These grants are specially designed for more focused financial help with walking aids. Unlike the more generic Disability Grant, this grant aims specifically to assist those with difficulties commuting from one place to another.
The grant has 3 major advantages which are!
A monthly stipend of R500 to R1000 to cover commuting fees.
A one-time allowance of R1500 for walking aids.
Reimbursements(with valid proof) for commuting to specific, essential locations.
Who can apply for the Grant?
You must be 18 years and above, a South African citizen of a permanent resident to apply for the Mobility Grant. Applicants must have a permanent walking disability. To qualify, you would have to get a disability certificate or a medical report to meet the requirements.
Great news for people who are already receiving the Disability Grant—there is additional support you can apply for! Even people who may not qualify for the main Disability Grant but struggle with mobility problems may qualify.
Ways to Apply for This Support
SASSA has made applying as easy as possible with the following options:
Online applications using the SASSA website
In-person applications in any SASSA office!
Outreach applications with community health workers in rural areas
You will need to provide a certified copy of your ID document, medical proof of disability, a proof of residence document, and any transport-related receipts if claiming reimbursements.
Why This Grant is Important!
Access to transport for many persons with disabilities in South Africa have made it difficult to work, study, seek medical care, and engage in community activities. The Mobility Grant directly helps overcome these challenges.
This program helps to show that independence and the ability to move freely are fundamental rights and not a luxury. With dedicated transport support, SASSA is enabling disabled persons to move towards a more integrated and inclusive society.
This grant marks a major change in South Africa’s support for people with disabilities—shifting from simply providing cash aid toward offering targeted assistance to remove the numerous barriers that restrict active and meaningful engagement in the life of the community.
Get ready to put your documents into your computer now and apply for the support when it goes live on the 15th of August 2025. That way you or someone you know could be genuinely helped by the support offer.
